A Brief History of Netherland Antilles by The World Factbook 2002

Once the center of the Caribbean slave trade, the island of Curacao was hard hit by the abolition of slavery in 1863. Its prosperity (and that of neighboring Aruba) was restored in the early 20th century with the construction of oil refineries to service the newly discovered Venezuelan oil fields. St. Martinus University Medical School

When selecting Caribbean Medical Schools, Curacao is the best kept secret. And so is the St. Martinus University! With over 150 years of history in quality education, St. Martinus is the logical choice when it comes to international health sciences education.

St. Martinus University offers a recognized academic model which prepares our students to pass the USMLE ( US Medical Licensure Examination ) parts I and II, which is required to practice medicine in the United States, and which standard is recognized and accepted all over the world. Our program is also comparable to European standards, which is why we have sought both European and American accreditation. Residency programs are available to students in the USA as well as other countries.

In 2001 St. Martinus University decided to focus exclusively on the health sciences, and after a complete renovation of our premises our Faculty of Medicine opened its doors in 2003.

The administration and faculty of St. Martinus University has over two decades of experience in developing medical school programs, and is thoroughly familiar with medical programs in the Caribbean. The St. Martinus University program differs from most Caribbean medical programs in that it focuses both on US and European standards, it is very focused on high academic quality and it offers different programs which are tailored to the various individual needs of the students.

St. Martinus has opted to go the trimester system. This was done at the request of many potential students who felt that the time saved is invaluable. Consequently, there will be three trimesters per year of approximately sixteen weeks each. The Basic Sciences will be final in five trimesters. The Clinical Program will continue to be administrated in six blocks of twelve weeks each at a pace dictated by the needs and wishes of the student.
